Isabel Martínez de Perón of Argentina was the first female to become president of a republic.

Perón served as the Argentine president from July 1974 to March 1976. She first took office following the death of her husband Juan, being next in the line of succession because she was vice president at the time. This means that she served as president, vice president, and first lady all within the same year! Unfortunately, she is also the first woman to be forced out of office by a military coup.
